Lagos will make history from October 3–5, 2025, as the first African city to host the E1 Electric Boat Racing Championship — the world’s first all-electric powerboat series. The E1 Championship promotes clean energy and marine sustainability while showcasing speed, innovation, and culture. Some of the biggest global sports icons are linked to the series, including LeBron James, Didier Drogba, Rafael Nadal, and Will Smith, whose teams are set to compete.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hailed the hosting as “a milestone not just for Lagos, but for Africa,” saying it reflects the state’s leadership in clean energy and sustainable marine transport. The event is backed by Afreximbank, which invested in Team Drogba, signaling confidence in Africa’s role in future-focused ventures.
Organisers confirmed that Lagos secured hosting rights against several global cities, with nine teams expected and over 250 international sports personalities attending. The championship will be accompanied by cultural showcases, technology exhibitions, and investment summits, highlighting Lagos’ blue economy and eco-tourism potential.
Officials say the tournament will not only boost tourism and economic activity but also spotlight Lagos’ drive to electrify water transport, enhance its waterways infrastructure, and cement its place alongside Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah on the global racing calendar. “History is happening here,” said Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee. “Lagos is racing for the future — for Africa, for the world.”
