The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has raised concerns over the killing of 36 cows and poisoning of 42 others on Wednesday near Tafi Gana junction in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Ya’u Idris, Chairman of MACBAN in Bassa, confirmed the incident on Thursday, stating that it occurred around 4:30 p.m. while the cattle were grazing. He explained that garden eggs laced with poison had been deliberately scattered in the grazing area, which the animals consumed.
Idris noted that the case had been reported to relevant security agencies, including the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the police. “The GOC personally visited the site to assess the situation. Of the 78 cattle present, 36 have died, while 42 remain in critical condition due to the poisoning,” he said.
He added that the GOC assured them of a thorough investigation and urged the herding community to remain calm and not take matters into their own hands.Idris echoed this appeal, calling for restraint from members of the Fulani community and expressing hope that justice would prevail through lawful means.
The incident occurred just two days after an attack in Zekki village, also in Bassa LGA, where 52 people were killed, and several homes destroyed. Members of the affected village had accused the herders of involvement in that attack, a claim MACBAN has strongly denied.
