An Ekiti State High Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti, has sentenced four individuals to death by hanging for conspiracy and armed robbery. The convicts, Ojo Tope, Aderopo Temitope, Oyedele Oluwatobi, and Damilola Christopher, were found guilty of the crimes.

The four defendants, along with a fifth person, Ekundayo Ajiboye, were arraigned before Justice Lekan Olatawura on April 16, 2024, on five counts of conspiracy and armed robbery. However, the court acquitted Ekundayo Ajiboye due to insufficient evidence linking him to the offenses.

According to the charges, the convicts conspired to rob multiple individuals, including Taye Adegboye, Idowu Damilola, Idowu Tolulope, and Ganiyu Abimbola, of their valuables. The stolen items included laptops, phones, jewelry, and cash totaling N136,000.

One of the victims, Idowu Oluwadamilola, recounted the events of the robbery in his statement to the police. He stated that he was asleep in his room around midnight when the robbers forced their way in.

“Before they gained access, I climbed and hid in the ceiling. When they entered, they told my brother that we were two in the room, and they threatened to shoot him if he refused to produce me. Immediately I came down from the ceiling, I was beaten seriously for daring them,” he said. The court’s verdict marks the culmination of the trial, which began in April 2024. The four convicts will face the death penalty for their crimes.

“Thereafter, they took our laptop computers, phones, power bank and chargers, all the money in the house, MP3 radio and other things. I, alongside other victims, went to report at the Ilupeju Police Station the following day.”
