UK Conservative Party Weighs Replacing Kemi Badenoch as Leader Six Months After Appointment

The United Kingdom’s Conservative Party is reportedly reconsidering Kemi Badenoch’s leadership, just six months after she took the helm. With the Tories projected to lose significant ground in Thursday’s local elections across England, over two dozen MPs and party officials told Bloomberg that Badenoch — who assumed leadership on November 2 — is increasingly seen as an unsuitable figure to lead the party into the next general election scheduled for 2029. Many lawmakers are said to be favoring Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, as her potential replacement, although sources requested anonymity when discussing internal party tensions.

The dissatisfaction stems from poor poll standings and concerns that Badenoch, 45, has mishandled her role by concentrating on less critical issues, allowing Nigel Farage’s Reform Party to gain momentum. Badenoch’s spokesperson declined to comment, while Jenrick’s team pointed to his Friday interview on GB News where he voiced support for Badenoch, saying, “I think people should give her a break.

“The party is bracing for a tough outcome in next week’s elections. In 2021, during Boris Johnson’s peak popularity following the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, the Conservatives secured about half of the contested councils. Since then, the Tories have suffered their worst general election result last July. Rob Ford, a political science professor at the University of Manchester, warned of a “total wipe-out,” emphasizing that the party could see an unprecedented decline.

Bloomberg’s composite poll shows the Tories have dropped more than five percentage points since December, now trailing both Labour and Reform. Initially, Badenoch was expected to have until the summer of 2026 to turn things around before facing any leadership challenge, but insiders suggest that timetable might be moved up if conditions worsen.

A senior party figure described Badenoch as having entered a “political death zone,” with her future becoming the main topic among donors and MPs. She inherited a daunting task after succeeding Rishi Sunak, whose defeat paved the way for Labour’s landslide victory and ended the Tories’ 14-year hold on power.Scarlett Maguire, founder of Merlin Strategy, noted that while some Conservatives believed the party had hit rock bottom in 2024, the reality might be even worse under Badenoch’s leadership. Despite a few wins, like last week’s court ruling defining a woman by biological sex — an issue Badenoch championed — her successes remain rare.

Sources reported growing frustrations with her political strategies and a preference for focusing on cultural issues like net-zero policies and transgender rights, rather than pressing voter concerns such as crime and immigration. Party headquarters is reportedly in disarray, with potential donor withdrawals and staff layoffs looming.

Badenoch’s performance during Prime Minister’s Questions has also drawn criticism from Tory MPs. Notably, in November, Starmer mocked her reference to a national petition, reminding her that voters had already delivered a “massive” verdict against the Conservatives at the polls. In February, her attempt to criticize Labour backfired when Starmer pointed out the issues she raised originated under Conservative governance.
