
With the introduction of online passport application and delivery services, Nigerians will soon be able apply and receive passports at home without being physically present in long queues in centres.
The eligibility criteria is that Nigerians aged 18 years and above, and those renewing expired passports can apply and obtain Contactless Passports. However, first-time applicants must register their biometrics at a passport processing centre physically.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, The Minister of Interior unveiled the contactless passport processing app at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in streamlining passport issuance and easing the burdens faced by Nigerians at home and globally. This innovative initiative aims to eliminate unnecessary hurdles and extortion by middlemen, providing a seamless experience for applicants.
Nigeria’s contactless passport processing project is a joint effort by two local firms, Irish Smart Technology and New World, who have been test-running the system for nine months. This innovative technology seeks to streamline passport issuance, making it more efficient and convenient for Nigerians. The app encompasses all necessary requirements for obtaining a Nigerian passport, ensuring a seamless experience.
Big changes are coming to Nigeria’s passport production process. Starting April next year, passport production will be centralized in Nigeria, making the process more efficient and streamlined. This means that immigration attachés in foreign missions will no longer be authorized to approve visa issuance, increasing efficiency.
The Nigerian government has just given the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) a major boost. The President has approved a directive allowing the NIS to retain 50% of its internally generated revenue, which will be a game-changer for the service. This means the NIS can now enhance its operations, reduce delays in passport processing, and provide better services to Nigerians.
Mrs. Kemi Nandap, The Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, highlights the benefits of the new contactless passport issuance system, saying it will not only make the process more convenient by eliminating physical processing hassles but also bolster the security of Nigerian passports to meet global standards.
