The Jigawa tanker explosion, which occurred on October 14, 2024, in Majiya town, resulted in a devastating loss of life and property. According to Hafizu Inuwa, Chairman of the Jigawa Tanker Explosion Investigation Panel, the accident claimed 209 lives and left 99 others injured.

The investigation panel, constituted by Governor Umar Namadi, identified several factors contributing to the accident, including a damaged speed-breaker, potholes, night driving, and speeding.

The committee recommended measures to prevent similar incidents, such as:-

  • Regular Safety Inspections: Ensuring petroleum transporters and articulated vehicles adhere to safety protocols.
  • Upgraded Emergency Response: Enhancing emergency response centers to respond effectively to such incidents.
  • Establishing Trauma and Burns Units: Creating specialized units in health facilities to treat burn victims.
  • Road Traffic Control Agency: Establishing an agency to regulate and control road traffic.

The accident destroyed properties worth millions of Naira, affecting 167 families. The Nigerian government has pledged support to the affected families, with President Bola Tinubu promising a comprehensive review of safety protocols to prevent similar incidents.
