A magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti granted Dele Farotimi ₦30 million bail with two sureties last Friday. Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun stipulated that the two sureties must be reputable members of society, with one required to own a property within the court’s jurisdiction.
As part of the bail conditions, Farotimi was required to surrender his international passport and refrain from granting media interviews throughout the trial. Dele Farotimi faced a 14-count charge of alleged defamation and entered a not-guilty plea.
Farotimi was accused by the police of criminally defaming Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria, in his book ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’. Dele Farotimi is concurrently facing trial in two courts for allegedly defaming Afe Babalola. Previously, on December 9, the federal high court in Ekiti granted him ₦50 million bail with one surety on a 12-count cybercrime charge filed by the inspector-general of police.
