
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a Consultant Psychiatrist and former Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new national president.Piwuna, who previously served as ASUU’s National Vice President, emerged as the union’s leader during the 23rd National Delegates Congress held at the University of Benin. He succeeds Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, whose tenure ended on May 11, 2025.

The election reportedly featured a contest between Piwuna and Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. Piwuna’s emergence comes at a time of renewed tension within the education sector, including concerns over the distribution of Earned Academic Allowances, persistent brain drain, and broader challenges in tertiary education.Other newly elected officials include Austen Sado as vice president, Happiness Uduk as financial secretary, Peter Adamu as treasurer, Celestine Aguoru as investment secretary, Aisha Bawa as welfare officer, and Kassim Umar as internal auditor.Osodeke, who led ASUU from 2021, became known for his opposition to federal initiatives like the IPPIS and his advocacy for university revitalisation and academic independence.
