NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have finally made their way back to Earth after an extended mission in space.Originally scheduled for just a week-long stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) following the first crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft in June, the pair instead remained in orbit for more than nine months due to technical issues.

Their long-awaited return was completed aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule. Alongside NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, Williams and Wilmore departed the ISS at 1:05 a.m. ET on Tuesday, touching down off the coast of Florida at 5:57 p.m. ET.

This marks the conclusion of an unusual chapter in spaceflight history. Their extended stay resulted from problems with the Boeing Starliner’s thrusters during docking, leading NASA to return the spacecraft to Earth in September without a crew on board.

While Williams and Wilmore remained on the ISS, they synchronized their return with Hague and Gorbunov, who had arrived in September for a scheduled six-month mission. NASA officials expect the astronauts to reunite with their families within the next day. Further updates on the future of Boeing’s Starliner capsule and upcoming crewed missions to the ISS will be provided in the coming months.
