A Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin has sentenced Abdulrahman Bello to death by hanging for the murder of Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a 24-year-old final-year student of the Kwara State College of Education. Justice Hannah Ajayi delivered the verdict on Thursday after a four-month trial, finding Bello guilty of killing Lawal, who was reportedly his lover through Facebook.
Four other co-defendants—Ahmed Abdulwasiu, Suleiman Muyideen, Jamiu Uthman, and Abdulrahmon Jamiu—were discharged and acquitted by the court. During the trial, Bello confessed to killing Lawal for ritual purposes, claiming he needed human body parts. The incident happened on February 13, 2025, after the victim had attended a naming ceremony and was invited to Bello’s residence near the Offa garage area in Ilorin.
Bello gave conflicting statements during proceedings. At one point, he claimed to have strangled her after sexual intercourse and later dismembered her body. In another version, he alleged she died of an asthma attack, but admitted to dismembering the body out of fear.
