The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, has announced that the Federal Government will extend support to 2.2 million households before the end of August. Speaking on Channels Television’s * Sunrise Daily on Monday, August 18, Sununu said the beneficiaries would be drawn from the lowest cadre in the national social register by the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO).
He noted that the intervention is part of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme, under which ₦419 billion has already been disbursed to five million Nigerians. According to him, 71 per cent of the beneficiaries are in the northern region, while 21 per cent are in the south.
Sununu stressed that the initiative reflects the government’s determination to support vulnerable citizens, ease the impact of economic hardship, and strengthen social protection systems. He added that the interventions are designed not only to provide immediate relief but also to lay a foundation for long-term poverty reduction.
