Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on President Bola Tinubu to sever diplomatic relations with the United States if President Donald Trump does not withdraw his threat of military action against Nigeria. In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi condemned Trump’s remarks, describing them as an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and urging an immediate and firm diplomatic response.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign nation with military attack is a deep insult to our authority, but we can choose to respond with dignity and strength,” he wrote. Gumi advised the Nigerian government to summon the U.S. ambassador and demand an official retraction, warning that failure to do so should prompt the termination of diplomatic relations.
“President Tinubu should summon the U.S. ambassador and insist they retract their threats, or we should cut diplomatic ties with such an irresponsible administration,” he stated. He further urged Nigeria to consider alternative avenues for economic and military cooperation. “There are many other opportunities for our economic growth and defense partnerships,” Gumi added.
