Pixelmator, a renowned image editing app developer for Apple devices, announced on Friday that it will be acquired by Apple.
Founded in 2007 in Lithuania, Pixelmator has gained recognition for its flagship apps, Pixelmator and Pixelmator Pro, which rival Adobe Photoshop, as well as Photomator, a dedicated photo editing tool.
Apple has consistently showcased Pixelmator apps in its keynote product launches, highlighting their seamless integration with Apple’s technology.
In 2018, Apple named Pixelmator Pro its Mac App of the Year, praising the company’s innovative use of machine learning and AI capabilities, such as object removal and automated color adjustments.
Pixelmator expressed its long-standing admiration for Apple, citing a shared focus on design, ease of use, and performance.
Unlike its Silicon Valley peers, Apple typically favors smaller, strategic acquisitions that enhance its features and capabilities.
The acquisition price remains undisclosed, with Pixelmator assuring users that its apps (Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator) will undergo no immediate changes.
Apple’s recent release of Apple Intelligence, featuring AI-driven photo editing capabilities, precedes this acquisition.
Apple has a history of acquiring acclaimed apps, such as Dark Sky (2020) and Workflow (2017), which were later integrated into Apple’s default weather app and Shortcuts, respectively.
