A widespread global outage has disrupted access to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with thousands of users reporting difficulties. According to outage-tracking site Downdetector, over 22,000 users experienced issues with Facebook, while more than 18,000 struggled to use WhatsApp.

The outages, which began around 1800 GMT on Wednesday, have been reported in multiple regions, including the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and the US. Downdetector’s data is based on user reports, and the actual number of affected users may be significantly higher.

Users have reported a range of issues, including being unable to access the apps altogether or experiencing problems with feeds not refreshing. The disruptions have caused inconvenience to users worldwide, highlighting the reliance on these social media platforms.

This outage is reminiscent of a major disruption in 2021, when Meta’s services, including Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram, went down for nearly six hours. Following that incident, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the disruption caused. The current outage has sparked concerns among users, who are awaiting a resolution to the issue. Meta has not yet released an official statement on the cause of the outage or an estimated timeframe for its resolution.
