The Federal Government of Nigeria has finalised plans to establish a campus of Coventry University in Nigeria, a step designed to give students affordable access to globally recognised degrees without having to study overseas. The project is built on a Transnational Education partnership and is expected to widen opportunities for Nigerian students to earn UK-standard qualifications locally while easing the financial pressure on families.

Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, revealed this during ongoing meetings in the United Kingdom, where he is part of the delegation accompanying Bola Ahmed Tinubu on an official visit. In a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, the minister is said to be engaging university executives, investors, and development partners to complete arrangements for the initiative.

The ministry stated that the planned campus will be located in Alaro City and will run undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine, Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training fields. The minister emphasised that certificates earned at the Nigeria campus will carry the same status as those awarded in the UK. He added that student admissions are expected to commence between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, pending regulatory clearance.

Alausa highlighted that the collaboration will make international-standard education more affordable and support the country’s human capital development goals. He said the aim is to allow families to keep their children at home while still accessing top-tier UK education. The Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria, working alongside the UK Department for Business and Trade, reaffirmed plans to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a centre for global education, innovation, and skills advancement. Officials added that the initiative is projected to draw increased foreign investment into the education sector and open up fresh pathways for academic growth and professional development within the country.
