Air Peace Halts Nationwide Flights Due to NiMet Workers’ Strike

Air Peace Airlines has announced the suspension of all domestic flight operations across Nigeria due to the ongoing industrial action by staff of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). In a statement released by the airline, it explained that the decision was taken in the interest of passenger and crew safety, as NiMet is responsible for providing CNH (Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather) reports—critical for safe navigation, particularly during this season of increased rainfall and thunderstorms. “Without real-time weather updates from NiMet via the control tower, safe flight operations cannot be guaranteed. As a safety-conscious airline, we have opted to suspend all operations until NiMet resumes full service,” the statement read.

The airline expressed regret over the disruption and apologized to affected passengers, assuring them that they would be contacted regarding rescheduling options. The strike action affecting NiMet is being driven by three aviation unions: the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP).

In a joint circular to their members, the unions criticized the long-standing poor remuneration of NiMet workers and described their efforts over the years to resolve the situation as largely unsuccessful. They noted that agreements reached with management on January 29, 2025, aimed at improving working conditions, have been violated.

The circular stated: “Given management’s failure to meet our demands, and considering the worsening hardship faced by workers—alongside the expiration of our issued ultimatum—we have resolved to resume the previously suspended strike.” As a result, all NiMet personnel across the country have been directed to withdraw their services indefinitely, effective from midnight, Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
