China has reaffirmed its position that Taiwan’s independence poses a serious threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity, insisting that the one-China principle remains non-negotiable and universally binding.Zhu Songbo, Chief of the Political Section at the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, made this known during a media briefing in Abuja focused on the role of the one-China principle in China-Nigeria relations.
Songbo stressed that under this principle, Taiwan is considered an inseparable part of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate authority representing all of China. He noted that this principle must be respected by all countries with diplomatic ties to China, as well as by all United Nations member states.
He commended Nigeria’s continued support for the one-China principle, highlighting the removal of the Taiwan Trade Office from Abuja as an example of this commitment.
Addressing media professionals, Songbo urged Nigerian journalists to avoid language that implies Taiwanese independence and to uphold journalistic standards of objectivity and fairness when reporting on China and cross-strait issues.
He warned that both separatist movements in Taiwan and foreign influence encouraging independence efforts were destabilising the Taiwan Strait and undermining regional peace.
Reiterating China’s pursuit of peaceful reunification, Songbo made clear that while dialogue remains the preferred route, Beijing will not tolerate actions that threaten its territorial unity.
