Subomi and Wahab, sons of Nigerian billionaire Razaq Okoya, have been invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning. The brothers were seen in a viral video spraying naira notes at a public event, which contravenes Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.

The EFCC has taken action against the brothers for their alleged abuse of the naira. In a letter signed by Michael Wetkas, acting Director of the Lagos directorate of the EFCC, the duo was directed to report to the head, special operations team at the 15A, Awolowo Road office of the commission.

Subomi has since apologized for his actions, claiming he was unaware that abusing the naira is an offense. In a post on his X account, Subomi stated that he did not understand the legal implications of his action.

He wrote: “To the Nigerian people, my actions were not to cause any trouble or harm. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support in this situation as I had no intention to raise such an alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action.”

The EFCC’s invitation to the brothers is a reminder that abusing the naira has legal consequences. The commission has been cracking down on individuals who abuse the naira, and this incident is the latest example. The brothers are expected to report to the EFCC’s Lagos office by 10 am on Monday, January 13, 2025, for further interrogation. The outcome of the investigation will determine the next course of action.
