The United States has announced that routine visa services at its Embassy in Abuja will end on August 1, 2026, as part of a major restructuring of visa operations across Africa. The operational shift impacts Abuja and 24 other diplomatic missions on the continent, transferring routine visa processing to designated regional hubs. The U.S. Department of State indicated that the overhaul aims to strengthen security screenings, boost operational efficiency, and establish more uniform application processing standards across overseas posts.

According to the State Department, the restructuring aligns overseas consular activities with national security priorities under the Trump administration. Officials emphasized that safeguarding American citizens remains a central priority, assuring that U.S. embassies and consulates will continue delivering routine and emergency services to citizens abroad. Along with Abuja, affected posts include diplomatic missions in Antananarivo, Asmara, Bamako, Banjul, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Conakry, Cotonou, Durban, Freetown, Gaborone, Harare, Juba, Libreville, Lilongwe, Lusaka, Maputo, Maseru, Mbabane, N’Djamena, Niamey, Nouakchott, Ouagadougou, and Windhoek. The department noted that similar regional consular arrangements have been deployed in other parts of Africa and Europe.

While routine processing ends in Abuja, full visa services in Nigeria will continue through the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, which serves as the designated regional hub. Other regional posts retaining full visa operations include Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Johannesburg, Kampala, Kigali, Kinshasa, Lomé, Luanda, Malabo, Monrovia, Nairobi, Port Louis, Praia, and Yaoundé.

The State Department confirmed that existing visa suspensions under Presidential Proclamation 10998, visa bond pilot programs, and temporary pauses on specific immigrant visa classes remain fully active.Applicants residing in impacted regions who plan to schedule U.S. visa interviews on or after August 1, 2026, must pay processing fees and book appointments at their assigned regional centers. Individuals with pre-existing appointments at the affected posts will be contacted directly with further instructions. This realignment leaves the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos as the sole location handling routine U.S. visa applications within Nigeria.
