Lagos lawmakers removes Speaker Mudashiru Obasa due to multiple allegations of financial fraud

Lagos State House of Assembly members impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on Monday, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions.Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Lasbat Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1 and previously served as chief whip of the House.

The impeachment came after The Gazette reported that Obasa oversaw the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers and other questionable activities.

Lawmakers used The Gazette’s January 10 article and internal expenditure documents to build their case against Obasa. Obasa, 52, was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, and has faced repeated allegations of fraud and political thuggery throughout his speakership.

In 2020, investigations by The Gazette and Sahara Reporters revealed that Obasa diverted Lagos funds to his personal firms and bank accounts. As a result, Obasa was invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He denied all allegations, and no charges were filed after meeting with detectives. At the time of his impeachment, Obasa was reportedly in Atlanta.
