Nigerians have been plunged into darkness following the latest collapse of the national power grid. The grid suffered a system failure around 11 am on Wednesday, resulting in a significant drop in power generation.
According to reports, the grid’s power generation capacity plummeted from 4,064 megawatts to 1,203MW within an hour, and further dropped to 0.00MW by 1 pm. This is not an isolated incident, as the national grid has collapsed over 12 times in 2024 alone and more than 100 times in the past decade.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the grid collapse on its official social media handle, apologizing to customers for the inconvenience. In a statement, AEDC explained that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am, causing a widespread power outage. The company assured customers that it is working to restore power supply as soon as possible.
Ikeja Electric also notified its customers about the grid system failure, stating that restoration efforts are underway in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The frequent collapse of the national grid has left many Nigerians frustrated and concerned about the country’s power infrastructure.
