British actor David Jonsson has been unveiled as the new Black Panther, stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise six years after the death of Chadwick Boseman, who originated the role on screen. The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con Hall H panel in San Diego, alongside confirmation that Black Panther 3 will premiere in theaters on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson, 32, will play Prince T’Challa II (popularly called Toussaint), the son of Boseman’s T’Challa and Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o. The character was first introduced as a child in the emotional closing scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022, and the upcoming installment will track his coming-of-age journey.Jonsson takes on the mantle following a string of breakout performances, including starring roles in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk. He is also recognized for his work in the BBC/HBO series Industry and the film Rye Lane.
Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 at the age of 43 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer, a diagnosis he kept hidden from the public and filmmakers while working through his illness. His death occurred while Marvel was in the early development phases of a sequel to the 2018 original, which grossed over $1.3 billion globally and made history as the first superhero film nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. In the wake of Boseman’s passing, Marvel made the decision not to recast the role of King T’Challa. Instead, 2022’s Wakanda Forever saw Letitia Wright’s character, Shuri, take up the Black Panther suit—a storyline that also earned Angela Bassett an Oscar nomination, the first acting nod for a Marvel film.
Wright is set to return as Shuri in Black Panther 3, alongside Winston Duke reprising his role as M’Baku. Denzel Washington is also set to join the cast in an undisclosed role, marking his debut in the MCU. Jonsson’s casting resolves years of speculation over the future of the Black Panther mantle, passing the legacy down through Boseman’s on-screen bloodline rather than recasting the original character.Ryan Coogler returns as writer and director to complete the trilogy he launched in 2018.
