Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has filed a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North Central. The case, lodged at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja by her lawyer Michael Numa, stems from comments made by Nwaebonyi during a March 6, 2025 interview on Channels Television.

In the suit, Akpoti-Uduaghan claims that Nwaebonyi falsely labeled her a “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “habitual blackmailer,” and made derogatory remarks implying she had six children from different men. She argues that these comments were false, damaging, and intended to tarnish her reputation, particularly as a prominent advocate for women in politics.

Akpoti-Uduaghan is seeking a declaration that the statements were defamatory and malicious, as well as a court order barring Nwaebonyi from making similar remarks in the future. She is also demanding that he retract the allegations on the same media platforms and issue a public apology in at least two national newspapers, both in print and online.

The senator further seeks N5 billion in aggravated and exemplary damages for the emotional distress, public embarrassment, and reputational harm caused. Additionally, she is requesting post-judgment interest of 10% per annum until the full payment is made. The suit underscores her contention that such defamatory attacks not only affect her personally but also discourage women from engaging in public service and politics.
