Deji Adeyanju, the legal counsel to social media activist VeryDarkMan, stated that his client was apprehended by EFCC operatives within the premises of GTBank in Abuja.Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission shortly after visiting a Guaranty Trust Bank branch, prompting online backlash and concerns over the bank’s potential involvement in what some have termed a deliberate crackdown.
Adeyanju noted that his legal team, led by Marvin Omorogbe, had already traced the activist’s location and initiated efforts to facilitate his release.“Our lawyers led by the Head of our firm @Marvin\_Omorogbe just met VDM’s friend who was arrested together with him in EFCC custody. VDM refused to come out of the cell; that he won’t see anyone,” Adeyanju said.
“We have located VDM and [are] working on getting him out. Our lawyers are now with him,” he added. “We will be taking legal actions against GTB for the inhumane treatment meted out to our client. We will issue a public statement soon.”
The circumstances surrounding his arrest remain undisclosed as of the time of this report, though it is being viewed by many as another instance of using state machinery to suppress critical voices.
Known for his outspoken social critiques and unfiltered commentary on the Nigerian elite, VeryDarkMan has frequently courted controversy, making him a consistent target of political and institutional pushback. His detention has intensified concerns over increasing attempts to curb dissent and restrict free expression through state enforcement agencies.
