INEC has announced that it has completed preparations for the by-elections scheduled to take place in 16 constituencies across 12 states on Saturday, August 16, 2025. The announcement was made in a Thursday statement by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, after the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja.

The polls will cover two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, and nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (two), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States. Court-ordered re-run elections will also be held in Enugu South I State Constituency, Enugu State, and Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency, Kano State.

Olumekun confirmed that all non-sensitive materials have been distributed, election technology such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System has been configured, and ad hoc staff recruitment and training, as well as security and logistics arrangements, are complete. The final batch of sensitive materials will be delivered as scheduled.

He reminded political parties and candidates that campaigns end at midnight on Thursday and urged all stakeholders — including voters, party agents, observers, and the media — to strictly follow laws and guidelines to ensure smooth polls. INEC also announced that the Continuous Voter Registration exercise will resume soon. The online pre-registration portal will open on August 18, 2025, while physical registration begins on August 25, 2025, at the commission’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide.

The exercise will allow first-time registration, transfers within or across states, and replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards. Olumekun warned that double or multiple registrations are illegal and will be punished under the law.
