Hakimi, 27, beat Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen to the award, becoming the first defender in more than a decade to claim the title. The award, which is usually dominated by attacking players, recognises African footballers who deliver outstanding performances for both club and country.

After receiving the trophy, Hakimi said, “This award means a lot to me and to my country. I’ve worked hard for moments like this, and I’m proud to represent Morocco on the global stage.” CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised Hakimi as “a world-class athlete who continues to elevate African football,” noting his consistency and leadership.

Hakimi has played a pivotal role in Morocco’s impressive international run and remains an important figure at PSG, producing standout performances in both domestic and European competitions. His victory adds to the growing recognition of Morocco’s rising football generation, following the country’s historic semi-final finish at the 2022 World Cup. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie made history by winning the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for the third straight year.
