Former senator representing Zamfara Central Senatorial District, Kabir Marafa, has defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking his second party switch within a month. Marafa, who served in the Senate from 2011 to 2019, was officially received alongside his supporters by the National Leader of the party, Seriake Dickson, at his residence in Abuja.
The move comes about three weeks after he left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on April 8, 2026, following his earlier resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on August 28, 2025. Speaking to journalists after receiving his NDC membership card, Marafa said internal legal disputes within the ADC and the limited time before key electoral deadlines influenced his decision to leave the party.
He explained that political participation depends on having a stable platform, questioning the prospects of the ADC amid ongoing court cases and uncertainty. Marafa further argued that prolonged litigation could prevent aspirants from meeting registration deadlines, leaving them without viable options ahead of elections.
He added that after consultations with his supporters and legal advisers, the decision to join the NDC was made in order to avoid future political uncertainty.He also stated that he and his supporters would align with whatever presidential direction the NDC eventually adopts. In his response, Dickson welcomed Marafa into the party, describing him as an experienced politician whose presence would strengthen the NDC, particularly in Zamfara State and the wider North-West region.
He urged the former senator to use his political experience to mobilise grassroots support and help address challenges such as insecurity in the region.Dickson also emphasised that the NDC is focused on service delivery, inclusion, and representation for vulnerable groups. Earlier, the National Chairman of the party, Moses Cleopas, said the party is built around a people-centred agenda aimed at national renewal. He noted that the NDC intends to provide an alternative platform for women, youths, and persons with disabilities as political activities intensify ahead of the next election cycle.
