Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has approved the rollout of a GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system designed to modernise the country’s national addressing structure. The announcement was made by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, following the council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The approval represents a significant milestone for the initiative, which was first introduced about four years ago. In 2022, the Nigerian Postal Service signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Population Commission to support the nationwide implementation of a digital postcode system. In a post on X, Tijani explained that the project is part of the ministry’s broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and improve its addressing framework. He said the system would introduce a modern geospatial addressing platform aimed at improving accuracy and enabling quicker, more reliable processing of mail and parcels.

The minister noted that the initiative will be implemented in partnership with the Nigerian Postal Service, currently headed by Tola Odeyemi. According to Tijani, the project will deliver benefits beyond postal services and will support wider national development objectives. He said the digital postcode system would strengthen national planning, enhance emergency response capabilities, improve logistics and e-commerce operations, and facilitate more efficient delivery of government services.

Tijani also emphasised that as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand, foundational systems such as a modern national addressing structure are essential for improving connectivity between citizens, businesses, and public institutions. He added that the council’s approval highlights the federal government’s commitment to building an enabling environment for a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy.
