Veteran Nollywood actress Eucharia Anunobi has spoken about the difficult relationship she had with her father while pursuing education and building a career in the entertainment industry. Speaking during a podcast interview, Anunobi revealed that her father strongly opposed her ambitions, believing it was unnecessary to educate a girl because she would eventually marry and take her husband’s name.
According to her, despite being financially comfortable, her father stopped supporting her education and distanced himself from her after she refused to follow the career path he had chosen for her. She explained that modeling eventually became the means through which she financed her schooling, allowing her to continue her education despite the lack of support from home.
Anunobi also recalled a painful episode when her father locked her in her room for six months after she refused to complete employment forms for an office job he wanted her to take. She said the forms were passed to her under the door repeatedly, but she refused to fill them out because she had no interest in working in an office environment.
The actress further revealed that her father effectively disowned her and strongly disapproved of her acting career, forcing her to secretly leave the house and sometimes jump the fence just to attend auditions. She said the turning point in their relationship came after she won her first award in London for her role in the film Glamour Girls.
Upon returning home, she presented the award to her father. According to her, he asked her to kneel down, placed sand in her hands and finally gave her his blessing. She recalled him saying that just as sand cannot be counted, her glory would never be measured. The moment, she said, marked the first time her father hugged and blessed her after years of conflict over her career choice.
