The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say they have destroyed a private aircraft linked to Ali Khamenei, while separate reports claim his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, is in Moscow receiving treatment for serious injuries. Posting on X on Monday, the IDF said the aircraft was struck at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran. According to the statement, the plane had been used by senior Iranian officials for travel tied to military procurement and communications with allied countries.
The IDF added that destroying the aircraft would disrupt leadership coordination, weaken efforts to expand military capacity, and limit the government’s ability to reorganize operations. Meanwhile, new media reports claim Mojtaba Khamenei traveled to Russia for medical care after being injured during a joint U.S.–Israeli air operation. The reports say he assumed leadership after his father’s death on February 28, though there have also been claims that he has been unconscious since the incident.
Kuwaiti outlet Al-Jarida reported that the treatment trip was arranged discreetly and involved transport on a Russian military aircraft. It further claimed he was taken to a presidential residence, where surgery was carried out. The report has not been independently confirmed, but the newspaper said its information came from a senior source close to Iran’s leadership.
According to the same source, Mojtaba was injured early in a U.S. operation referred to as Operation Epic Fury, and receiving treatment inside Iran was considered difficult amid ongoing conflict. It remains unclear whether his injuries occurred in the same strikes that killed his father. A separate account cited by The Sun, referencing messages from an exiled dissident, claimed Mojtaba was in critical condition and receiving care at Sina University Hospital in Mashhad.
The source described his condition as extremely serious and said he was being treated by Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi, Iran’s Minister of Health and a senior trauma specialist. Speaking on Friday, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said American officials believe Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded. He told reporters that intelligence assessments indicate Iran’s new leader had been injured, though no further official details were provided.
