The Independent National Electoral Commission has decided to remove the names of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress led by David Mark from its official portal, in line with an order of the Court of Appeal. The commission made this known in a statement on Wednesday, noting that it would preserve the existing situation before the dispute arose until a substantive case before the Federal High Court in Abuja is resolved. This move comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, as factions led by Nafiu Bala Gombe and David Mark continue to contest control of the party’s national structure.
INEC explained that the Court of Appeal, in a judgment delivered on March 12, 2026, directed all parties to maintain the status quo and avoid any action that could affect the final outcome of the case. The commission stated that it would comply with the ruling by refraining from taking steps that could undermine the court proceedings or preempt the decision of the trial court.
It further clarified that although the names of the current NWC members were uploaded to its portal on September 9, 2025, this occurred after the suit had already been filed on September 2, 2025.As a result, INEC said the names would now be removed in obedience to the court’s directive, pending the final determination of the matter. The commission also declined a request from Bala’s faction seeking his recognition as acting national chairman, stating that such a move would go against the court’s order.
Additionally, INEC announced that it would suspend all interactions with both factions of the party, including monitoring of meetings, congresses, and conventions, until the court delivers its final judgment. It reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality and respect for judicial decisions, while urging political stakeholders to avoid actions that could disrupt preparations for the 2027 general elections. The leadership dispute within the ADC has led to multiple legal actions, with both sides seeking court backing to establish control over the party.
