Not everyone within WWE is fully convinced that Brock Lesnar has officially called it a career.Speculation about his retirement began after the future Hall of Famer left his MMA gloves and wrestling boots in the ring following his defeat to Oba Femi at WrestleMania on Sunday, April 19. Speaking on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that some people inside WWE are not entirely convinced Lesnar is done. However, he added that Lesnar is still expected to step away from wrestling at some point in 2026.
“From what I’ve heard from people in WWE, they don’t think he’s retired just yet, although he likely will be at some stage this year,” Meltzer said. “The truth is, no one seems to know for certain. It could be one of those situations where everything is being kept under wraps, similar to the Seth Rollins storyline injury. A few people have hinted at it, but nothing is confirmed.”
After spending decades as one of WWE’s biggest stars, it feels unlikely that Lesnar would end his career with a match that lasted less than five minutes and ended in defeat to Oba Femi. It appeared more plausible that the two were being set up for a longer rivalry. In another Wrestling Observer Radio discussion, Meltzer revealed that there were initial plans for Lesnar and Femi to engage in a full feud, but those plans were scrapped in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania. “At one stage, the idea was to run a full program between Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi, but that got dropped weeks before the event,” Meltzer said. “Originally, this wasn’t meant to be a one-off match.”
As things stand, fans are left questioning whether that match was Lesnar’s final in-ring appearance. If it turns out to be his last, it would be a surprisingly quiet ending for someone who has played such a major role in WWE. That said, similar understated exits have happened before, including AJ Styles’ final match.Regardless of Lesnar’s immediate future, one thing is clear — Oba Femi is emerging as a dominant new force. His victory on Sunday felt like a clear passing-of-the-torch moment.Femi is not only gaining strong support from the WWE Universe, but he’s also building an impressive list of victories.
Interestingly, it now looks like he could be heading toward a showdown with Roman Reigns. “Tomorrow is for celebration,” Femi said after WrestleMania. “The weeks ahead are about establishing myself as a new main event star. And by the end of the year, ‘The OTC’ can come and test me.” Reigns later responded to those comments. “Oba had a big moment,” he said. “You think you can take me out? You’re still new to this. What you did tonight is big, but I’ve done it many times — and with the title on the line. I’ve won it and defended it. Let’s see how you handle the summer, then we’ll know if you’re ready to step up to the greatest of all time.” It’s beginning to look like a clash between The Ruler and The Tribal Chief is only a matter of time.
