The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce the immediate shutdown of all pornographic websites in Nigeria. This directive was given during plenary on Tuesday. The lawmakers suggested that internet providers must block access to these sites under the new directive.

This move is aimed at protecting societal values and curbing the spread of cyber pornography in the country.Dalhatu Tafoki, the member representing Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal constituency, sponsored the motion. He emphasized the need to block internet websites hosting pornographic content and sanction internet service providers responsible for posting such content.

Tafoki noted that cyber pornography is a growing global problem, and Nigeria must take concrete steps to address it. He called for urgent action to be taken to protect the country’s values and morals. The House adopted the motion, mandating its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to ensure implementation and report back within four weeks for further legislative action..

The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abass, warned that sanctions would be imposed on internet service providers that default on this directive. This move is expected to curb the spread of pornographic content in Nigeria. The directive has sparked mixed reactions, with some cancelling it as a move to protect societal values, while others have raised concerns about censorship and freedom of expression.
