The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled Saturday, 16 August 2025, for bye-elections in 16 constituencies across 12 states.INEC Chairperson, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the development during a meeting with the Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Abuja on Thursday.

The bye-elections cover two senatorial seats, five federal constituencies, and nine state constituencies. According to Yakubu, more vacancies have been declared since the commission last conducted nine bye-elections in February 2024 to fill legislative vacancies caused by deaths and resignations. However, elections will not be held in two constituencies: Khana II State Constituency in Rivers State due to the current state of emergency, and Talata Mafara South State Constituency in Zamfara State, which is under legal dispute following a declaration of vacancy by the state assembly.

Yakubu stated that INEC will deploy 30,451 officials for the exercise, which will also include court-ordered re-run elections in Enugu South I (Enugu State) and Ghari/Tsanyawa (Kano State) constituencies. For the senatorial seats, elections will hold in Anambra South and Edo Central. The Anambra South seat became vacant following the death of Ifeanyi Ubah in 2024, while the Edo Central seat was vacated when Monday Okpebholo became governor.
