The Katsina State Executive Council has approved ₦19,898,400,000.00 for the procurement and installation of 20.1MWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity with 10.1MWh Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across 11 major public facilities, along with an additional 10MWp of solar power at Lambar Rimi. The approval followed a detailed memorandum presented by the Special Adviser to Governor Dikko Umaru Radda on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ahmed, during the council’s 11th meeting held on Wednesday.

The proposal, supported by the Committee on Alternative Sources of Energy, highlights the administration’s strategy to adopt renewable energy as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, reduce pressure on the national grid, and improve long-term fiscal efficiency.

Dr. Ahmed described the project as a decisive move toward a more sustainable future for Katsina State. He stated that by adopting renewable energy at this scale, the state government is improving essential public services while promoting environmental responsibility and economic resilience. The approved project will deploy solar + BESS systems in key institutions, including Ajiwa, Zobe, and Funtua Water Works; Umaru Musa Yar’adua University; General Amadi Rimi Orthopaedic Hospital; Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic; Katsina State House of Assembly; Turai Yar’adua Maternity Hospital; State High Court; Isah Kaita College of Education; and the Booster Station.

A major component of the plan is the revival of the 10MW Lambar Rimi Wind Farm, which will be complemented with an additional 10MWp of solar capacity. The state will retain full ownership of this renewable energy asset, while operations and power purchase agreements will be managed through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) model.

The ₦19.89 billion investment will follow globally competitive pricing standards for solar panels, hybrid inverters, and battery storage systems, ensuring both cost efficiency and durability. The administration has reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable development, ensuring that state resources are used to deliver measurable, lasting benefits to the people of Katsina.
