Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly collapsed in his office on Thursday morning and could not be revived.Sources revealed that Ewhrudjakpo had worked late into Wednesday evening, during which he hosted a meeting where UNICEF commended Governor Douye Diri for advancing primary healthcare in the state. He was also said to have attended another meeting early Thursday involving community leaders and stakeholders engaged in pipeline surveillance. According to insiders, the discussion became tense.
After leaving the conference room, Ewhrudjakpo was climbing the staircase when he suddenly slumped. His aides and senior officials who were present rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa, where doctors confirmed his death. Government operations have come to a standstill, with top officials declining to comment publicly on the situation. Sources within the administration said Governor Diri, who is currently outside the country, has been informed and is returning to the state.
Ewhrudjakpo, aged 60, was elected alongside Diri in February 2020, following a brief stint in the Senate representing Bayelsa West. Before becoming Deputy Governor, he served as Commissioner for Works under former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson. He hailed from Ofoni community in Sagbama.
