The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the appointment of renowned Nollywood actress and philanthropist Mercy Johnson-Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy. The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, and made available to journalists in Benin City.
According to the statement, the appointment takes immediate effect and is intended to strengthen citizens’ engagement with government policies and programmes across the state. Mercy Johnson-Okojie is one of Nollywood’s most prominent figures and is widely recognised as an actress, producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Her career, which spans nearly two decades, includes appearances in more than 200 films, along with multiple awards and nominations, including honours from the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and other notable platforms.
Beyond the entertainment industry, she is known for her humanitarian and advocacy work through the Mercy Johnson-Okojie Foundation, where she has led initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, child welfare, educational support and healthcare outreach. In her new role, she is expected to use her broad public appeal, communication skills and grassroots reach to promote civic awareness, encourage public participation and strengthen the connection between the government and the people.
The Edo State Government said the appointment reflects Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to leveraging the expertise, credibility and goodwill of distinguished Nigerians in advancing the vision of a prosperous and united state. The statement added that the administration remains committed to inclusive governance and effective communication as essential pillars for sustainable development in Edo State.
