Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has become the only aspirant for the Nigeria Democratic Congress’ 2027 presidential ticket after the party concluded the sale of nomination forms. The party announced that sales of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the presidential election have officially closed, with Obi reportedly emerging as the sole purchaser before the deadline.
Party insiders disclosed that Obi, who previously served as governor of Anambra State, was the only contender to obtain the presidential nomination forms. Meanwhile, the NDC has extended by one week the deadline for collecting nomination forms for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly positions. The extension applies exclusively to aspirants contesting for those offices.
This latest development represents another significant phase in Obi’s political repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, following his recent defection from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress amid ongoing opposition coalition discussions. According to the party’s timetable, the screening exercise for aspirants who have purchased and completed their forms will commence on May 19 and conclude on May 26. Observers believe Obi’s emergence as the sole aspirant may reflect the party’s strategy to prevent internal divisions and consolidate opposition backing behind a single candidate ahead of the next election cycle.
