Portugal and Al-Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo risks missing the start of the 2026 World Cup following his red card against Ireland on Thursday. The veteran forward was sent off for elbowing Dara O’Shea, a decision upheld after a VAR review. Portugal couldn’t recover at the Aviva Stadium, falling behind early after Troy Parrott’s first-half brace.

Despite the setback, Portugal remain top of Group F and can seal qualification with a win at home against Armenia.Ronaldo’s participation at the World Cup will depend on the length of his suspension. If he receives more than a one-match ban, the punishment could extend into the tournament proper.

For instance, with a two-game ban, Ronaldo would miss the Armenia qualifier and Portugal’s World Cup opener if they qualify automatically. If Portugal fail to beat Armenia and must go through the play-offs, he would instead miss the first leg of the play-off.
