LaLiga side Atlético Madrid have completed the signing of Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman and officially unveiled him to supporters on Monday, February 2.The 28-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2030. He is expected to make his debut in Atlético’s midweek Copa del Rey encounter against Real Betis.
Pulse Sports reports that Lookman opted for a move to Atlético Madrid ahead of joining fellow Nigerians Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu in the Turkish Super League, after both destinations matched Atalanta’s €40 million valuation. The Madrid-based club moved swiftly to finalise the transfer, with reports suggesting they were keen to have the Nigerian attacker available for Thursday’s match against Real Betis at La Cartuja.
Confirming the deal in a statement, the club said it had reached an agreement with Atalanta for the transfer of the Nigerian international, who will wear the red and white colours for the remainder of the current campaign and the next four seasons, signing a contract that runs until June 30, 2030. Atlético described Lookman as a versatile and energetic right-footed attacker capable of playing as a second striker or operating on either wing, where his pace and dribbling ability are key strengths.
Atlético Madrid currently sit nine points behind league leaders Barcelona and trail second-placed Real Madrid by eight points. The club will be hoping Lookman can deliver performances comparable to those of standout attackers such as Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé as they push to close the gap at the top of the table.
