On Wednesday, some Instagram users received an alarming notification: certain photos in their Stories archives had been permanently deleted, with no possibility of recovery. The message read, “This story is no longer available. Due to a technical issue, this story is no longer available. While we’ve since fixed this issue, your story can’t be restored.”
Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has not disclosed how many users were impacted by the bug but confirmed that only those whose Stories were lost received the notification. A Meta spokesperson stated, “We found and fixed a bug that caused some people’s Story highlights and archives to be deleted. Unfortunately, we are unable to restore these Stories, and we’re letting people know in the app if they’re impacted.”
The issue primarily affected Instagram Stories, a feature that allows users to post photos, videos, or text that disappear after 24 hours. These Stories can be saved in the Story Archives or highlighted permanently on a user’s profile. Unlike regular posts, Stories often include personal touches such as music, GIFs, filters, and interactive elements like polls, making them a unique and often cherished part of a user’s Instagram experience.
Many users treat their Story Archives as a digital photo diary, preserving everything from memes and music screenshots to vacation snapshots. Instagram even offers a “memories” feature that resurfaces old Stories from previous years, adding to the sentimental value of these archived posts. Unfortunately, the recent bug affected both the Story Archives and the Story Highlights, which serve as a more permanent display of selected Stories on users’ profiles.
Meta assured users that the black screen showing the error message will be removed by July 2025. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with relying solely on a single platform to store important media. Users are encouraged to back up their photos, videos, and other content outside of apps like Instagram, regardless of how trustworthy the platform may seem. This ensures that valuable memories are protected against unexpected technical issues.
