Tinubu Approves Upgrade of Maiduguri Airport to International StatusPresident Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Maiduguri Airport in Borno State to international status. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, via his verified X handle (@SundayDareSD).

Dare highlighted that this approval completes the establishment of at least one international airport in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He wrote, “President Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Maiduguri Airport to international status. This ensures that every geopolitical zone in Nigeria now has an international airport.”

Nigeria’s international airports play a vital role in travel, trade, and tourism. Major international airports in the country include: Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos (Nigeria’s busiest and primary hub for global air traffic), Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Port Harcourt International Airport, Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, and KanoVictor Attah International Airport, Uyo.

These airports handle both passenger and cargo flights, contributing significantly to the country’s economy and connectivity. In another development, Dare also announced the official commencement of the African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU) in Abuja.
