The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has announced Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its gubernatorial flagbearer for the 2027 election.The process occurred at the APC Secretariat located on Acme Road in Ogba on Thursday and was characterized by party executives as orderly and open. Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, shared a video clip detailing the declaration of the election outcome on X.
The head of the APC National Governorship Election Committee, Gen. Jon Temlong (retd.), made the official announcement in the company of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, party executives, and major political figures, such as Senator Ganiyu Solomon, ex-Deputy Governor Femi Pedro, local council chairpersons, Lagos State Executive Council representatives, legislators, and various party affiliates. Based on the figures provided by the election official, Hamzat amassed 657,917 votes from the 657,974 accredited votes submitted, whereas his opponent, Lanre Jim-Kamal, received a single vote.
A different contender, Samuel Ajose, pulled out of the contest prior to the voting process. Announcing the final outcome, Temlong stated, “I, Gen. Jon Temlong (retd.), hereby affirm that Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, having satisfied the guidelines set out in the party’s constitution, is returned as the winner of the governorship primary and the APC candidate for the 2027 election, this 21st day of May, 2026.”
During his acceptance address, Hamzat extended his appreciation to party chieftains and loyalists, with specific reference to Governor Sanwo-Olu. “I want to thank Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for what you have done for this state and the party,” he remarked. He likewise credited members of the National Assembly, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and the election panel, while showing deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his guidance. “With humility, I accept the candidacy of the APC in the upcoming 2027 elections,” Hamzat stated further.
