Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has officially taken office as the 24th Chief of Army Staff, marking a new era for the Nigerian Army. This milestone was celebrated with a symbolic lowering and hoisting of the command flag at Army Headquarters on Monday. Oluyede’s appointment was made by President Bola Tinubu on October 30, following the passing of his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

Notably, Oluyede and Lagbaja were coursemates at the Nigerian Defence Academy. Prior to his appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna State. His military career spans over three decades, having been commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992. The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, presented Oluyede with the insignia of office on November 1, in a ceremony aligned with the Armed Forces Act .

Oluyede’s confirmation by the Senate and House of Representatives solidified his position as the new Chief of Army Staff. As Oluyede begins his tenure, he faces significant challenges, including counterinsurgency operations in the North-East and addressing banditry in the North-West.
