The Senate has appointed Senator Orji Kalu (APC, Abia-North) as the chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission. This appointment marks a significant development in the commission’s establishment. Senator Kalu’s appointment was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session. This move is expected to facilitate the commission’s objectives and promote development in the South-East region.
Prior to this appointment, Senator Kalu chaired the Senate Committee on Privatisation. His experience in this role will likely inform his leadership of the South-East Development Commission committee. Senator Ken Eze (Ebonyi Central) was named vice chairman of the committee, while other members will be announced later. The committee’s composition is expected to reflect a diverse range of expertise and perspectives.
As chairman, Senator Kalu will oversee the commission’s mandate, which includes civil restitution, erosion control, security restoration, and infrastructure development. These initiatives aim to address pressing challenges in the South-East region. The South-East Development Commission board, comprising 18 members, will be chaired by Dr. Emeka Nworgu, with Hon. Mark Okoye serving as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. This board will work closely with Senator Kalu’s committee to drive development in the region. The committee is expected to play a crucial role in driving the implementation of the commission’s objectives and ensuring the development of the South-East region. Senator Kalu’s leadership will be instrumental in shaping the commission’s impact.
