Examination hall collapses on WASSCE candidates at Government Secondary School, Namnai, Gassol LGA, Taraba State

Several students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Government Secondary School in Namnai village, Gassol Local Government Area, narrowly avoided tragedy after a classroom building collapsed during a storm on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. when the second group of candidates had just commenced their exam. A sudden downpour accompanied by strong winds led to the structure caving in, trapping students, teachers, NYSC corps members, and exam officials inside.

Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, a local resident, reported that several students, both male and female, sustained severe injuries, including fractures. He added that the trapped individuals were eventually rescued by members of the community after several hours.

Victims were transported to a nearby primary health centre for medical attention. The storm also damaged several residential buildings in the area in addition to the school facility. Meanwhile, in Jalingo, the state capital, the same weather conditions disrupted ongoing WASSCE exams. Flooded roads and poor visibility left many students stranded and unable to return home until after 1 a.m. Authorities are yet to release a statement detailing the full extent of the damage or any changes to the examination schedule.
