The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken a bold step in the fight against counterfeit and unwholesome products. In a recent operation, the agency arrested over 40 suspects and destroyed banned pharmaceutical and other products worth a staggering N100 billion.

The destruction exercise, which took place at the Dumpsite in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government area, was overseen by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Christiana Mojisola Adeyeye. The seized items included Analgin, controlled substances like Tramadol 225mg, and other unregistered products. According to Prof. Adeyeye, the recent discovery of counterfeit products at three major markets in Nigeria was “mind-boggling.”

She emphasized that the presence of these banned products poses a significant threat to national security. This operation is a testament to NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health and safety. The agency’s efforts to rid the country of counterfeit and unwholesome products are ongoing, with a focus on protecting Nigerians from harmful substances.

“This operation could not have been made possible without the support of the National Security Advisor, (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu who graciously approved the use of over 1,000 security personnel including the Military, Police and DSS.”

Shaba Mohammed disclosed that selling of drugs in open market was illegal and punishable act under the law. According to him, “It is punishable offence to sell the drugs in an open market. Also, it is illegal for people to hawk drugs inside the vehicle, kiosk and open market.
