The Social Democratic Party has suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, over allegations of financial misconduct and misappropriation of party funds. Also suspended are the National Auditor, Nnadi Clarkson, and the National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Uchechukwu.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba.According to the statement, the suspended officials were involved in unauthorized financial activities, personal enrichment schemes, and the diversion of funds without approval from the National Working Committee.

Aiyenigba stated that Gabam had submitted an unapproved financial report to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and published a summary in national newspapers, prompting the party to notify law enforcement authorities. He said the action underscores the party’s commitment to fighting corruption. An interim panel has been established to audit the party’s financial records and recommend disciplinary or legal measures.

In accordance with the party’s constitution, the Deputy National Chairman (North), Sadiq Abubakar, has been named Acting National Chairman. The party alleges that the misappropriated funds amount to hundreds of millions of naira, including revenue from the 2023 nomination form sales and various donations. INEC and other relevant agencies have been officially informed of the suspensions, which take effect immediately.
