Joshua, a two-time world boxing champion, was seated in the back of a black Lexus SUV when it crashed into a parked truck on a major highway near Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, on 29 December. Two of his close associates, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, lost their lives in the accident.Ghami served as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was one of his trainers and was often described as being like a “twin brother” to him. A 46-year-old man, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, as well as reckless and negligent driving, driving without proper care, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.

Kayode appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State, in southwestern Nigeria, on Tuesday. At the request of the prosecution, the case was postponed until 25 February. Joshua, who holds both British and Nigerian citizenship, was discharged from hospital a few days after the incident.

Police confirmed that he sustained only minor injuries. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash occurred around midday local time on 29 December along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu. Born in Watford to Nigerian parents, Joshua was in Nigeria for a holiday following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on 19 December.
