Peter Mandelson has been taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following an investigation connected to newly released materials from the Epstein files. The 72-year-old former Labour cabinet minister and former UK ambassador to the United States was escorted from his Camden home in London by plain-clothes officers on Monday and driven away in a police vehicle. Authorities also carried out search operations at a separate property in Wiltshire.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed the development, stating that a 72-year-old man was arrested in Camden on Monday, February 23, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was transported to a London police station for questioning. The arrest followed search warrants executed at two locations in Wiltshire and Camden. Earlier, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hayley Sewart said officers from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime team were conducting searches at properties in both areas as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct in public office involving the same individual.

Mandelson is alleged to have shared confidential, market-sensitive information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as business secretary under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, particularly during the 2008 financial crisis. Reports indicate that police have initiated a criminal probe into these accusations.

Photographs released by the US Department of Justice within the Epstein files reportedly show Mandelson at Epstein’s residence in Paris and another image of the pair together on a yacht. Documents are also said to reference multiple payments from Epstein to Mandelson and his husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva. Mandelson has yet to comment publicly on the recent claims. In an earlier interview with The Times, he acknowledged exercising poor judgment over funds Epstein provided to his husband for an osteopathy course.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who appointed Mandelson as ambassador to Washington in December 2024, has since publicly distanced himself from him. Starmer stated that Mandelson had betrayed the country, Parliament, and the Labour Party, adding that he regretted the appointment and would not have brought him into government had he been aware of the full circumstances.

Mandelson, a prominent figure during the New Labour years and widely known by the nickname “Prince of Darkness” due to his political clout, was removed from his diplomatic role in Washington last year over his association with Epstein. The Metropolitan Police investigation is still ongoing.
